Fascinating Genderqueer Characters in Manga: Grelle Sutcliffe

Grelle is one of those love him or hate him sort of characters. I have to say, that if you are reading/watching Kuroshitsuji and you haven’t gotten through the Jack the Ripper story arc yet, much of what I’m about to say will be spoilers.

 

I’m including Grelle as genderqueer because although he is male, he has said himself in a character guide that he thinks God should have made him a woman. Indeed, he prances about, acts quite girly at times, and wants to have Sebastian’s babies.

What else is interesting about Grelle?

- stunning red hair

- goofy librarian glasses

- off the shoulder long coat fashion sense

- some seriously sharp teeth

- uses a chainsaw as a death scythe; how cool is that?

 

I have to point out that Grelle’s role in the manga is small…he doesn’t appear again after the Jack the Ripper story arc. But in the anime his role is extended quite a bit, so there is more of him to love (or be annoyed by).

Ah, I love Grell.

It's funny, a little distance was all I needed to get past my Kuroshitsuji squick. And now that I'm watching it on Hulu, the "mature audiences only" disclaimer is enough to prepare me for the bad and wrong.

And [ cough cough ] I might have registered a Grell rp character too...
