Fascinating Genderqueer Characters in Manga: Kuroyuri

Kuroyuri from 07-Ghost is of undetermined gender, and Wikipedia, describes hir in genderneutral terms (with invented pronouns like sie and hir), so I will try to do the same. Sie used “boku” as an “I” pronoun in Japanese, which is usually used by boys and tomboys.

 

 

So what’s interesting about Kuroyuri?

-part of the evil team who works for the main antagonist in the story

-totally bonded to hir best friend Haruse; it’s great to see even the bad guys can show love (ship ship ship!)

-a horrible cook, dumps blue fluid on everything; apparently cursed when younger and lost hir sense of taste.

-great fighter, can hold hir own for the most part, even though sie’s small and young

-eyepatch (with a wee skull on the side it, of course) and purple hair!

 

In short, Kuroyuri is one of my favorite characters in the series, and I’m always happen when sie shows up, even if it means sie’s going to kick the butts of one of the heroes!
