When I first started crushing on Xerxes Break of Pandora Hearts, I thought I was out of my head. Who in their right mind would find this wrist-flapping, lollipop-sucking, doll-on-his-shoulder goofball attractive? A lot of people, apparently. He’s got fangirl groups all over the place, and tons of people writing fanfic about him.

So let’s look at this picture, from Jun Mochizuki’s art book Pandora Hearts: Odds and Ends. We see dear Xerxes Break, atop a mountain of skulls (presumably all the people he’s murdered), with head wrappings to stop the blood from leaking out of his empty right eyeball socket. Dig the feather boa cape, and the way he’s kicked off his boots and is daintily touching his bare feet with his hand. Life is good.

Now let us consider his character:

-handy with a sword and magic spells

-powerful “chain” weapon called the Mad Hatter at his disposal

-seemingly psychic

-swoops in to save people’s lives at just the right moment

-selfish and impudent on the outside, but with a heart of sugar

-has a traumatic past , slowly losing his senses, could die any day (cue the pathos)

What’s not to love?
